Sony’s PlayStation 5 has reportedly become the best-selling game console in the U.S. by breaking all-time unit and dollar sales records in November.
According to Mat Piscatella, an executive director of games for analyst provider NPD group, the PS5 "achieved the highest launch month unit and dollar sales for a video game hardware platform in U.S. history," breaking Sony's prior record with its PlayStation 4.
US NPD HW - PlayStation 5 achieved the highest launch month unit and dollar sales for a video game hardware platform in U.S. history. The records were previously held by the PlayStation 4, which debuted in November 2013.

"Launch month sales of a new console have no correlation to long-term performance, so I don't think the strong launch performance says much more than Sony was confident enough to make the units available for sale that would reach the record," Piscatella also told GameDaily. "I am certainly optimistic for the long-term prospects for both new gen consoles, but I don't take anything more away from the launch month sales than that's the number of units that were produced and distributed."
He added that consumers set a new November record by spending $1.4 billion on new video game hardware, which marked a 58 percent increase over sales at this time last year. Year-to-date hardware spending also reached $4 billion, a 34 percent increase from 2019. Piscatella credited this growth to the launch of both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
While Sony has moved an unprecedented number of PlayStation 5 units so far, Piscatella noted that the Nintendo Switch has been the best-selling hardware platform in units sold for a record 24 consecutive months and "is one of the best-performing consoles in U.S. history."
"Nintendo has established Switch as a device that is complementary and additive to the market, and one that is more cooperative than in direct competition with PlayStation and Xbox," he continued. "This can be seen in the very high cross-ownership rates we see between owners of Switch and those who also own a PS4 and/or Xbox One."
In regard to 2020's games, Piscatella stated that Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War was the best-selling game of both November and 2020. The game also currently ranks #1 on both PlayStation and Xbox platforms for the month of November and the year.
Another game currently ranked in the top five for 2020 is Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, which sits at #2 and achieved the highest launch month sales for any Assassin's Creed title since 2012. And Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales was the 3rd best-selling game of November and ranked second on PlayStation platforms.
He concluded, “Just about everything is selling well. I don't know if we'll see 35 percent growth in a November month again anytime soon, so I'm just going to enjoy the ride."
